Ooh me leg!
Part 1
“Cameron,” called Rowena urgently, “Can you come and see to this customer please? I’m just getting the lemon meringues out of the oven." “Has there ever been a morning when it hasn’t?” muttered Rowena to herself through gritted teeth.
He did a double take and then let out a great shout of surprise. “Mum! Dad! What on earth are you doing here?”
“In answer to your question, Rowena wrote to us and mentioned how rushed off her feet she was, what with the four kids and the business to run so we’ve come to help,” explained Patricia.
Rowena made a mental note that today Cameron was making a lot less fuss about his leg than he usually did and couldn’t help thinking it must be to do with his parents being here.

The family sat down to some well deserved elevenses after a busy couple of hours. Unfortunately for him, Patricia had heard the exchange and immediately questioned “What’s wrong with your leg Cameron?”
Rowena glanced at Cameron and saw him looking very hard at his plate.
Roland started to laugh almost uncontrollably until tears were running down his cheeks. “Old cricket wound!” he spluttered in between his deep guffaws, “Old cricket wound my foot!”
Juniper and Buck looked from their still guffawing Grandad to their sheepish looking Dad with puzzled expressions over their faces.

“Um,” blustered Cameron, “Can’t Juniper or Buck see to them? My leg is giving me a bit of jip this morning.”
Taking a deep breath she called back patiently to her hypochondriac of a husband “I’ve put a chair at the take away window for you so you can sit down while taking the orders.”
In response, Cameron limped through from the back with cries of “Ooh, me leg.” Still groaning, he gingerly lowered himself into the chair. After settling himself into a comfortable position he glanced up to see who the early morning customers were.
“Nice to see you too son,” chuckled Roland.
“Goes without saying Dad,” Cameron said hurriedly, “Was just surprised is all.” Cameron didn’t look quite as pleased as he should have but this was overlooked as the children came rushing downstairs to smoother their grandparents with hugs.
Soon Roland and Patricia had got stuck in helping while Cameron sheepishly watched the busyness from his chair.
Above the happy chatter round the table, Buck called across the table “Dad, how’s your leg today?” Usually, Cameron would have used this as an opportunity to regale them all with the hardships of enduring all his aches and pains but today he just uttered in a low voice as though he didn’t wish to be heard “Not so bad today thanks Buck.”
“Don’t you know Grandma?” exclaimed Juniper “It’s Daddy’s old cricket wound from when he was a boy.”
At this, Cameron jumped up and started clearly plates away with an enthusiasm he didn’t normally display. “Time to get back to work I think,” he said.
“Not so quick my boy,” said Patricia sternly. Cameron reluctantly lowered himself back down into his chair with a resigned air. Rowena just leaned back in her chair waiting to see what would unfold. She suspected she wouldn’t be that surprised.
“Grandma, why is Grandad laughing so much?” asked a puzzled Juniper, “Did Dad not hurt his leg playing cricket?” “No love he did not,” asserted Patricia. “Cameron are you going to tell them or shall I?” To be continued... |
